Description Gordian III, 240-244 (reigned 238-244), AR Antoninianus (21x22mm), VF/VF+. RSC 41, RIC 83. Obv. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. AETERNITATI AVG, Sol standing, facing, head left, holding globe. The coin is of bright metal. Legends are full, with a few reverse letters a little weak. The portrait shows good detail, with a touch of weaknes above the ear. The reverse image is nicely struck. Gordian III was the grandson and nephew, respectively, of the emperors Gordian I and Gordian II. He came the throne at about age 13, and was killed at age 19 by soldiers carrying out the wishes of the future emperor Philip I.
