From the Gemini IV Auction, Closed January 8, 2008. Lot # 458 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$250 / Price Realized: US$275 Gordian III, Lot of 2 muled antoniniani. 2 silver antoniniani Gordian III, Lot of 2 muled antoniniani. (238-244 AD). 2 silver antoniniani (3.71 and 4.34 gm). Rome, 239 AD. The first coin, with reverse P M TR P II COS P P, Providentia standing left, of early 239 AD, should have shown Gordian’s earliest obverse legend, IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, but this reverse die survived until the end of the year, when it was erroneously coupled with his third obverse legend, IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG. Not in RIC or Cohen, apparently unpublished apart from the appearance of this same specimen in the Schulten and Triton sales (see pedigree). The second coin, with reverse LIBERALITAS AVG III, Liberalitas standing left, should have shown Gordian’s third obverse legend, IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, but was erroneously coupled with his second obverse legend, IMP CAES GORDIANVS PIVS AVG, apparently struck from an old obverse die which had managed to remain in use. RIC 223 (as hybrid); Cohen 141 (Paris). Rare: no specimens in Dorchester hoard or Eauze hoard, none in Berk photofile or CoinArchives. TWO COINS IN LOT. Very fine. Both ex Triton V, 2002, George His Collection, lot 2069 and part of lot 2062; the first coin also ex Schulten, 11 April 1988, lot 698. © 2005-2008 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
