RIC (Claudius) 102; Vagi 532. Good VF, rough Tiber patina, full flan, rim filing at 11:00, good style. Agrippina was the wife of Germanicus, and the father of six children who survived into adulthood, including the emperor Caligula. She was banished by Tiberius to an island, where she died. Her memory was honored under Caligula and Claudius. Agrippina was the daughter of Marcus Agrippa, the military hero and best friend of Augustus, and Julia, daughter of Augustus. As the granddaughter of Rome's first Emperor, Agrippina's position in Roman society was assured, but she secured her position in history as well, in 5 A.D., when she married Germanicus, another military hero, after his adoption by his uncle Tiberius, in 4 A.D. Though he was a future possible heir to the throne, Germanicus was to die before Tiberius, and thus Agrippina never became Empress. However, their marriage resulted in the birth of nine children, including a future Emperor (Caligula) and a future Empress (Agrippina Junior, wife of Claudius, and mother of Nero). Agrippina was the unlucky victim of Sejanus, Tiberius' corrupt Praetorian Prefect, who arranged for Tiberius to banish her to a remote island (Pandateria) in 29 A.D., where she later died of starvation.
