Green patina. (Pegasi 96 $80(VF)) Arcadius (Flavius) (emperor in the east, 395-408) was born in Spain in about 377. As the elder son of THEODOSIUS I THE GREAT and Aelia Flavia Flaccilla was early marked out as his father's intended successor, receiving the title of Augustus as a boy in 383. His tutor was the philosopher Themistius. He succeeded to the throne in Constantinople on the news of Theodosius' death in Milan in January 395. Despite his status as the senior Augustus (his younger brother Honorius ruled in the West), Arcadius never succeeded in breaking away from the dominance of others. On 27 November 395 he looked on as the praetorian prefect Rufinus was murdered by the troops: an act which facilitated the supremacy of the chamberlain Eutropius; four years later Eutropius in turn fell victim to the power of the Empress Eudoxia (whose marriage to the emperor, Eutropius had himself arranged). Eudoxia's ascendancy came to an end with her death in 404, and Anthemius the praetorian prefect emerged as the chief influence on Arcadius' last years; his supremacy at the eastern court outlasted the emperor's natural death on 1 May 408. Arcadius had done little to make himself known to the people, although crowds had flocked to see him, according to the church historian Socrates Scholasticus, on one of the rare occasions when he had appeared in the streets. Another chronicler, Philostorgius, mentions his dusky complexion, and describes him as a short and thin young man of unimpressive appearance. His heavy-lidded, somnolent eyes reflected a sluggish, stupid personality. His public life, therefore, amounted to little more than the careers of the persons who successively directed his government. Yet the fact that the throne, upon his death, passed without a hitch to his seven-year-old son. Theodosius II was a remarkable tribute to the prolonged stability of the dynasty to which they belonged. *Actual coin is better than scan* *Authenticity and satisfaction guaranteed* *Shipping (personal check or money order): $1.50-insured(value less than $50) $2.50-insured(value more than $50) $1.50(regular mail International) $6.00(registered mail International) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item. --------------------------------------------------------------- Announcements | Register | eBay Store | SafeHarbor | Feedback Forum | About eBay Copyright © 1995-1999 eBay Inc.
