CN. POMPEY MAGNUS (Pompey the Great). 43-36 BC. Æ As (23.53 gm). Sicilian mint. Laureate head of Janus with the features of Cn. Pompeius Magnus; MAGN above / Prow of galley right; PIVS above, IMP below. Crawford 479/1; Sear, CRI 336; Sydenham 1044a; RPC I 671; BMCRR (Spain) 101-102. EF, exceptional green patina and perfectly centered. [See color plate 13] ($4000) This type is traditionally assigned to Spain during the period 45-44 BC, but in fact, the issue is more likely to have been struck in Sicily after Sextus Pompey's arrival in 43 BC; the edges are rounded unlike the straight edges of the pieces certainly struck in Spain, and the style of this issue varies considerably suggesting that there may have been several mints involved in its production. Regardless of when and where it was struck, it is from the final issue of the Janus/Prow Republican bronzes. Triton V Sale, 16 Jan 2002, lot 1839. Lot was unsold.
