Description This piece was minted after 45 BC, under Sextus Pompey, who was the son of Pompey the Great by his third wife Mucia. He fought along with his brother against Caesar at Munda, and managed to escape with his life. After Caesar's death, he gathered a fleet, became master of the Mediterranean, and seized Sicily. He was eventually defeated by the fleet of Octavian, and fled from Sicliy to Asia, where he was taken prisoner and executed in 35 BC. The obverse of this piece depicts a laureate Janiform head with the features of Pompey the Great, with ligatured legend MAGN above. The reverse features the prow of a galley right, with legends PIVS above, and IMP below. Coin shows a little mottling of the green patina at right, but otherwise grades a nice AVF, with clear devices and legends all around, and nice green patina. A very attractive example of this scarce imperatorial type, catalouged as Sear 348. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
