Cocceius Nerva in the name of Mark Antony and his youngest brother, Lucius Antonius. Mark Antony was best known as the colleauge of Julius Caesar and later the consort of Cleopatra. Born in 83 BC, Antony was already a cavalry commander at the age of 22. He joined Julius Caesar in Gaul, and was appointed tribune of the people and augur in 49 BC, and consul in 48 BC. In 43 BC, he formed the Second Triumvirate with Octavian and Lepidus. After the battle of Philippi, he went to Asia, his province, where he met Cleopatra and was immediately captivated by her. Ultimately, he would quarrel with Octavian, who defeated him at the battle of Actium. He fled with Cleopatra, and committed suicide at Alexandria in 30 BC. Lucius Antonius was Consul in 41 BC when he engaged in war with Octavian, at the instigation of Antony's first wife, Fulvia. After an unsuccessful defense of the town of Perusia, his life was spared, and he was later appointed by Octavian to command in Iberia. The obverse of this type depicts the bare head of Mark Antony facing right, with partly ligatured legends M.ANT.IMP.AVG.III.VIR.R.P.C.M.NERVA.PROQ.P. The reverse features the bare head of Lucius Antonius facing right, with legends L.ANTONIVS.COS. This type was minted to mark the Consulship of Lucius Antonius. Coin shows a little dark patina, but otherwise grades VF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around, and nice portraits of both Mark Antony and Lucius Antonius. A pleasing example of this rare and highly sought after type, catalouged as RSC-2, and listing in Sear at 900 Pounds. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
