Description This piece was minted circa 41 BC, under the authority of the moneyer M.Barbat, who was a friend of Julius Caesar and Quaestor Pro Praetorae to Mark Antony in the East. This type was minted to mark the reconciliation of Antony and Octavian. This reconciliation would not last long, however, and Antony and Cleopatra would challenge Octavian for mastery of the Roman world, but they were defeated at Actium, and both Antony and Cleopatra would commit suicide. Octavian would be declared Augustus several years later, and would become Rome's first emperor, ruling until 14 AD. The obverse of this type depicts the bare head of Antony facing right, with legends M.ANT.IMP.AVG.III.VIR.R.P.C.M.BARBAT.Q.P. The reverse type features the bare head of Octavian facing right, with legends CAESAR.IMP.PONT.III.VIR.R.P.C. This piece is a little off center on the obverse, and appears to have been struck from a worn obverse die, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with bold portraits, clear legends where struck up, and an especially nice reverse. A choice example of this scarce and always highly sought after type, catalouged as RSC-8. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
