This type was minted for the legions under Antony's command, and form an interesting record of the size and composition of the armies at Antony's disposal, as coins were minted to honor each legion or unit under Antony's command. These pieces formed the payroll for Antony in advance of the great battle at Actium, where Antony and Cleopatra's forces were defeated by those of Octavian. Despite this outcome, and the fact that these pieces were often struck in debased silver, they continued to circulate well into the first century AD, with pieces of this type even found among the circulating coins found in the ruins of Pompeii. The obverse of this type depicts a galley right, with legends ANT.AVG. above, and III.VIR.R.P.C. below. The reverse type features a legionary eagle between two standards, with legend LEG.XIII. below. Coin is struck a bit off center, and shows some banker's marks, but otherwise grades F, with devices and legends mostly visible where struck up. A very decent example of this historic and popular type! All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
