                                Cyrenaica mint. Head of Jupiter-Ammon right / 
                                Victory walking right, carrying wreath and palm. 
                                Crawford 546/2d; Sydenham 1280; CRI 390; RSC 1b.

                                It is interesting that Lucius Pinarius Scarpus, 
                                under whose direct command this coin was issued, 
                                was a great-nephew of Julius Caesar; yet, he 
                                sided with Antony against Octavian at Actium, 
                                about which time this coin was struck. 
                                Immediately prior to the battle, Scarpus 
                                defected to Octavian, but his perfidious nature 
                                kept him from holding public office under his 
                                new master. The obverse type of this coin 
                                depicting Jupiter-Ammon was directly copied from 
                                the coinage of Cyrenaica where Scarpus held 
                                command of four legions under Antony.
