Description This piece was minted circa 31-30 BC, under the authority of Lucius Pinarius Scarpus. Scarpus was the grandson of Julius Caesar, and heir to an eighth of his property. He commanded for Antony in the war against Brutus and Cassius, and shortly before the battle of Actium was placed in charge of Cyrene, with the command of four legions. Mark Antony is, of course, best known as the colleauge of Julius Caesar and later the consort of Cleopatra. Born in 83 BC, Antony was already a cavalry commander at the age of 22. He joined Julius Caesar in Gaul, and was appointed tribune of the people and augur in 49 BC, and consul in 48 BC. In 43 BC, he formed the Second Triumvirate with Octavian and Lepidus. After the battle of Philippi, he went to Asia, his province, where he met Cleopatra and was immediately captivated by her. Ultimately, he would quarrel with Octavian, who defeated him at the battle of Actium. He fled with Cleopatra, and committed suicide at Alexandria in 30 BC. This was one of the two final types of denarii struck for Mark Antony by Scarpus. The obverse of this type depicts the head of Jupiter (Zeus) Ammon facing right, with legends M.ANTO.COS.III.IMP.IIII. The reverse features Victory walking right, with legends ANTONIO.AVG.SCARPVS.IMP. Coin is struck on a typical smallish flan, and shows a couple of unobtrusive banker's marks, but otherwise grades VF, with clear to bold devices and legends where struck up. A pleasing example of this rare type, catalogued as RSC-1a. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC now accepted for purchases over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
