Rev: Simpulum (ladle), aspergillum (sprinkler), securis (slaughtering axe) and apex (priest's headgear) inside beaded border. Ref: Sear RCV #353, Sear RSC #49, Van Meter #4. Comment: A very nice example of this early lifetime issue of Julius Caesar from the period 49-48 BC. This coin was likely to have been struck to help fund the invasion of Italy (Van Meter). The elephant trampling snake has come to be interpreted as some of the following: victory over evil; victory over the provinces (Africa and Asia as represented by the serpent); and politically referring to an enemy of Caesar named Metellus Scipio, whose family (Caecilii Metelli) depicted elephants on the coinage they sponsored as moneyers [see Caecilia 14,38,43,47 from c. 130-46 BC]. The snake was to have represented the safety of the Republic, which was being crushed by the allegory of Metellus. (This last from Van Meter). A slightly uneven strike leaves part of the obverse legend weak. Some spots of dark toning on the reverse still do not detract from this affordable, popular piece of early Roman history. The reserve price on this coin is $375. I have posted this reserve price to allow those collectors that wish to bookmark this auction to do so without having to place an excessively high bid. Sorry if the notion of using a reserve offends anyone. ------------------------------------------------------- Add $2.00 Shipping and Handling to bid price.
