Description This piece was minted circa 42 BC, under the authority of the moneyer L. Mussidius Longus in the name of Julius Caesar, who was born in 100 BC, and was, of course, assassinated on the Ides of March, 44 BC. He began his political career as a young man, opposing the dictatorship of Sulla. He became a prominent figure in the Roman aristocracy, and was elected consul in 59 BC, after having formed the first triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus. He campaigned in Gaul almost continuously between 58 and 50 BC, and he would also lead an expedition to Britain in 55-54 BC. He defeated Pompey at Pharsalus in 48 BC, and would spend the next two years defeating the remnants of the Pompeian party. He returned to Rome the undisputed master of the Roman world, but would hold supreme power for only a brief period before his death. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Caesar facing right. The reverse features the legends L.MVSSIDIVS.LONGVS above a rudder, cornucopiae on globe, caduceus, and priest's hat. Coin shows a thin flan crack, and an obverse field scratch, but otherwise grades Good F/AVF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around, and even traces of the original mint lustre in the lettering of the reverse! A very pleasing example of this rare Caesar portrait type, catalouged as RSC-29. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
