Concerning Our Switch To "Private Auction" : Our decision to list all of our eBay coin offerings as "Private Auctions" is being done at the request of many of our important coin collectors. Please take the time to read why we have taken this step. Over the past year a significant number of our dedicated customers have urged us to consider private auctions so that they may avoid receiving the enormous amounts of spam from individuals and companies who make a habit of harvesting the email addresses of eBay users. For many, this is particularly disturbing and embarrassing when spam for adults only services and products continue to flood their inbox. In addition, some of our clients have informed us that they have become the target of hate groups due to their purchases of certain ethnic coins. This is especially true with coins of Jewish origin. And even though eBay has made tremendous efforts to curb attempts to gain access to user information, it continues to be a serious problem. We have decided, therefore, to take the only step possible to protect our client confidentiality by switching to private auctions. Private auctions have always been the normal procedure for all auction houses such as Christie's, Sotheby's, and major coin sales as well. We fully realize that many eBay users are reluctant to bid on private auctions, but the privacy of our clients is certainly more important than any other consideration. Description: We are very pleased to offer this extremely desirable genuine 2000+ year old Roman silver Denarius of Julius Caesar for your consideration. This historic coin was minted in Spain 46-45 BC and commemorates Caesar's conquest of Gaul from 58-50 BC which culminated in the capture of Vercingetorix, the celebrated chieftain of the Arverni. It features a large portrait of the goddess Venus, from whom Caesar was believed to have descended and a rare depiction of a military trophy of Gallic arms. This example survives in very fine condition with both sides being well struck , well centered and still exhibiting a beautiful luster. Our photo does not truly capture the luster and details which are so apparent when viewing this coin in person. There are a few small areas of oxidation and surface scratches. Without a doubt, this coin represents a rare surviving testament to one of the most significant figures in human history. In addition, it is among the few coinage types which actually bear his name. ( For more on Caesar's Gallic War see below ). The artistry and mythological subjects of ancient Roman coins have always been a tremendous lure to collectors. In addition, these heirlooms of the ancient world have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this exceptional 2000+ year old example to your collection. We've decided to offer this impressive and historic coin with no reserve to stimulate active bidding and encourage new collectors. CAESAR Size: 19 mm Weight: 3.70 grams Reference: Sear 1404 / RSC 13 Caesar's Gallic War: Of all Caesar's military campaigns, the Gallic war plays the single most important part, as evidenced in his literary work which is the only authority for this part of Roman history. Caesar had become proconsul in Gaul in 58 BC at a time when the province was in a state of tranquillity. Fortune, however, seemed determined to provide Caesar with an opportunity to display his military genius when the Helvetti began migrating from their homes in the Alps for new regions to settle in Gaul, serving as an invitation for war. As they were crossing the Arar (now Saone) he attacked and routed them, later defeated them again, and at last drove them back to their own country. Thus began eight successive years of largely successful campaigns that would secure Gaul for Roman control. The next year, 57 BC, Caesar moved north and conquered the Belgae, driving a wedge between the Germans and Central Gaul, then spent much of 56 BC in Armorica (Normandy and Brittany) suppressing rebellious tribes. In perhaps the most daring campaign of the Gallic War, Caesar crossed the Rhine in 55 BC after defeating the German tribes on its western banks, then devastated the lands of the Sugambri before marching to the coast for a naval invasion of Britain, the first of two. In August of 55 BC, a force of two legions made the Channel crossing to Dover. After being battered to near disaster by tides, storms and hostile Celts, Caesar returned to Gaul just in time to suppress a revolt among the Belgae. Next year, in July of 54 BC, a major force of five legions made a second invasion of Britain, advancing as far as the Thames. Before a permanent camp could be established in Britain, however, Caesar had to return to Gaul and spent all of 53 BC subduing the Belgae and other rebellious tribes in the north including the Nervii, Menapii, and Treveri near the Rhine, as well as the Senones and Carnutes. A massive Gallic rebellion the following year (52 BC) was led by the Arverni warrior chieftain Vercingetorix. After several small sieges and battles, Vercingetorix and the Gauls were besieged by Caesar at the battle of Alesia. Outnumbered by a factor of at least five to one, Caesar's military genius still prevailed. Through 51 and 50 BC, Caesar completed the Roman conquest of Gaul. Death or slavery had carried off most of its principal citizens. Of all the chiefs who had fought for Gallic independence only two survived - Commius and Ambiorix. Banished far from their country they died in obscurity. Vercingetorix was brought to Rome where he was paraded in golden chains during Caesar's triumph and later put to death. THE DANGERS OF LAST MINUTE BIDDING : Almost without fail after an auction has closed we receive emails from bidders who claim they were attempting to place a bid and were unable to get into eBay. There is nothing we can do to help bidders who were "locked out" while trying to place a "last minute" bid. All we can do in this regard is to urge you to place your bids early. If you're serious in your intent to become a winning bidder please avoid eBay's high traffic during the close of an auction. Its certainly your choice how you handle your bidding, but we'd rather see you a winner instead of being left out during the last minute scramble.
