Sydenham 1026 Obv.: "CAESAR DIC TER" Winged, draped bust of Victory right, star behind. Rev. "C CLOVI PRAEF" Minerva advancing left, holding trophies, spear with image of the Gorgon's head, and shield, snake at her feet. A nice example of a rarely offered coin. This type has been referres to as both an As and a dupondius. It was the first regulary issued Roman bronze coin in some fourty years, and along with the Pompeian issue of the same year, would be the last bronze issue until the reformed coinage of Augustus around 22 B.C. This issue, with its strongly military images, was possibly minted for use as a donative to the common people at Caesar's Spanish Triumph. The issue was minted under the authority of the Praefect C. Clovius, although we are not sure of what type of praefecture he held. The coin itself is in strong shape, with some wear to the high points of the design, but with good detail remaining, full legends, and an even brown patina. As always, all coins are unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic as described. Also, if you are not satisifed with your purchase, return it within ten days for a full refund. Shipping is $2.00 in the U.S., $2.50 to Canada, and $5.00 elsewhere.
