Rare Julius Caesar Aureus $1,350.00 (reserve not met) A rare, lifetime issue of Julius Caesar. It was minted by praetor (and close personal friend of Caesar) Aulus Hirtius in 46 BC during Caesar's third consulship (see COS TER in obverse inscription). At one time it was thought the veiled head was Caesar himself, but it is now considered unlikely to have occured as early as 46 BC. This is a seldom seen chance to own a gold coin minted during Caesars lifetime and just 2 years before his assassination. After more than 2,000 years it is truly a bit of history. Grade: VF Slightly o/c reverse, not enough to interfere with devices or inscription. Weight: 8.090 gr. Reference: Sear, Roman Coins 349. Sear, History and Coinage of the Roman Imperators 56 Crawford 466 Obverse: Veiled female head (Vesta?) right. 'C. CAESAR COS. TER.' Reverse: Emblems of augurate and pontificate, lituus, jug and axe. 'A. HIRTIVS PR.'
