Description This piece was minted under Cnaeus Pompey Junior, who was the elder son of Pompey the Great and Mucia. During the course of the African War, he crossed over to Spain via the Balearic Islands, and was joined by his younger brother Sextus, and Titus Labienus following the Pompeian defeat at Thapsus in 46 BC. Their military activities in the Iberian Peninsula necessitated Caesar's intervention, and in 45 BC, the dictator defeated the Pompeians at Munda. Sextus escaped, but Cnaeus was captured and executed. The obverse of this type depicts the helmeted head of Roma right, with legend M.POBLICI.LEG.PRO. before, and PR behind. The reverse type features a female figure (Baetica or Hispania) standing right, presenting palm to Cnaeus Pompey alighting from prow, with legends CN.MAGNUS.IMP. in the exergue and on the right. Coin grades F, with major devices clear, and most obverse legends visible, at least in part. Only a bit of the reverse legend is present. This example also shows attractive colour. A very decent and affordable example of this very scarce Imperatorial type, catalouged as Sear 337. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
