Silver Denarius, Corduba Spain mint Obverse: M. POBLICI LEG PRO PR; Crested helmeted head of Roma right. Reverse: CN MAGNVS IMP; Hispania standing right, presenting palm-branch to Cn. Pompey standing left on prow of galley armed with sword. Condition: Near EF, Coin is better than picture. The actual coin has more lustre. Coin is very attractive for the issue. It has surfaces of good metal with just a faint trace of porosity (hardly enough to mention). The coin is light silver with darker gray in the recesses. Centering is not that bad for the issue, and coin has most of the legends. Nice portrait with hardly any wear and attractive example of this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? Compare to a similar type in CNG 53, lot 1331, where a toned good VF was estimated at $400 and sold for $500 + 10%. This coin has a better obverse and worse reverse than lot 1331. See also, CNG 46, lots 1090 and 1091, for a toned VF estimated at $300 and a good VF estimated at $400. The coin at auction is much nicer than lot 1090 and has less wear than lot 1091. The obverse of this coin has hardly any wear on the helmet brim, which is of decent relief, which makes it quite attractive for the grade. The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $296 in VF and $720 in EF. In Vagi, Coinage of the Roman Empire, it is valued at $400-$600 in VF and $700-$1000 in EF Size: 3.49 grams; die axis = 6; flan 2.0 mm thick; 20 mm in diameter.
