Co-assassin of Julius Caesar Very Scarce Roman Imperatoral - Silver Denarius, Military mint travelling with Brutus in Southwestern Asia Minor, probably at Smyrna, spring to early summer 42 BC. Obverse: Bust of Libertas right, veiled and draped; before L SESTI PRO Q counterclockwise; all within beaded border. Reverse: Tripod between sacrificial ax and simpulum; behind and around clockwise Q.CAEPIO BRVTVS PRO COS; all within beaded border. Condition: Good EF. Coin is much better than picture. This is a good example of the workmanship (or lack thereof) of a traveling military mint. The face is somewhat crude having an emaciated appearance, although the veil and hair is decent, a sign of a beginning die engraver. The lettering is awkward in both spacing and size. There are two engraver's errors on the reverse, a small somewhat horizontal line in the lower right leg of the tripod and a line extending down from the "R." The "OS" in COS is definitely there under the tripod, but barely fits in, and even then, extends into the horizontal line supporting the tripod. Obviously, the die engraver(s) was a novice. I hope he improved or he probably did not engrave dies very long. In spite of that, the coin has excellent centering with a full beaded border for the reverse. It also has a good strike, except for the obverse legend, which is more legible than the picture indicates. The coin has excellent metal with a very nice sheen and black toning with a tinge of dark blue and purple near the edges. The high points are lighter which accentuates the design. The ear of Libertas is complete and softly struck, but does not show in the picture. This is an exceptional example of this coin. Valuation: Why valuation? The strike, centering, excellent state of preservation, and the military style make this a very choice example of this coin. Many would describe this coin as a Choice EF, but I reserve that grade for artistic examples, although if I were doing a collection of military examples, it would certainly be a Choice EF for that collection. Going through the last 20 CNG and Triton auction catalogs, I only found 3 high grade examples. Compare to Triton II, lot 731, where a toned, good VF, with a hairline crack was estimated at $750. Lot 731 has significantly more wear on the veil, ear, hair, and tripod. It is off centered, but complete on a large flan. It has a better obverse legend. But, lot 731 also has a flan crack. Compare to CNG 42, lot 779, where a toned good VF was estimated at $1,000. Lot 779 has significantly more wear on the veil, ear, hair, and tripod. It is decently centered and has a better obverse legend. Compare to CNG 41, lot 1671, where a toned EF was estimated at $1,500. Lot 1671 has more wear on the veil, hair, tripod, and simpulum. It is the ear covered style of a veiled figure. It has the "S" of COS under the tripod. It is decently centered and has a better obverse legend. In Sear, Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, the coin is valued at $720 in VF and $1,760 in EF. Sear, The History and Coinage of the Imperators 49-27 BC, values it at $1,750 in EF. Vagi, Coinage and History of the Roman Empire, values it at $400-600 in F, $500-$800 in VF, and $1,500-2,000 in EF. The example in Sear Millenium, #1433 has the "S" in COS under the tripod, as does Lot 1671. However, in my incomplete research, I have not found another example of "OS" of COS under the tripod as is in the coin at auction. This would be an area for further research and could lead to a significantly rarer status of the coin at auction. Crawford reports that there are less than 33 reverse dies for this complete issue. All in all, the coin at auction has the least wear of any of the examples, and condition is critical in valuation of a coin. That, coupled with its charismatic military style make this coin an exceptional example of this very scarce issue. Size: 3.59 grams, die axis = 0, flan 2.0 mm thick, 20.0 mm in diameter.
