Ancient Paeonia: Our knowledge of ancient Paeonia, the exact boundaries of which, like the early history of its inhabitants, is somewhat obscure. During the reign of king Philip II of Macedon, Paeonia covered most of what is now the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and was located immediately north of ancient Macedon ( roughly corresponding to the modern Greek region of Macedonia ) and south of Dardania ( modern Kosovo ). The Paeonians are sometimes regarded as descendants of the Phrygians of Asia Minor, large numbers of whom are believed to have migrated to Europe. According to Herodotus, however, they were Teucrian colonists from Troy. Homer speaks of Paeonians from the Axios fighting along side the Trojans, but he does not mention whether the Paeonians were kin to the Trojans. Homer names the Paeonian leader as Pyraechmes and later, in the Iliad, mentions a second leader named Asteropaeus, son of Pelagon. An inscription, discovered in 1877 at Olympia on the base of a statue, states that it was sponsored by the Paeonians in honor of their founding king Dropion. Another king, whose name appears as Lyppeius on a fragment of a treaty of alliance found in Athens is no doubt identical with the Lycceius or Lycpeius known from Paeonian coinage. The Paeonians included several independent tribes, among them the Derrones, which were later united under the rule of a single king. Although little is known of their specific religious beliefs and customs, evidence indicates they adopted the cult of Dionysus, known as Dyalus or Dryalus, and Herodotus mentions that Thracian and Paeonian women offered sacrifices to Artemis. Following the Persian invasion, the Paeonians of the lower Strymon fell under Persian rule while those in the north maintained their independence. They were finally subdued by Philip II who permitted the retention of their monarchy. After the Roman conquest of Macedon in 146 BC, Paeonia east and west of the Axios formed the second and third districts respectively of the Roman province of Macedonia. Centuries later, under Diocletian, Paeonia and Pelagonia formed the province of Macedonia secunda or Macedonia salutaris, under the control of the Praetorian prefecture of Illyricum.
