At first appointed to rule Thrace in the name of Alexander's son, in 297 he proclaimed himself king of the country and began battling it out for control of Macedo, Greece and Asia Minor. He accomplished this in 285 BC, but fell in battle to Seleukos I four years later at the age of 81. A robust and ruthless man, Lysimachos made a powerful impression on the Greek world, and his beautiful coin designs long outlived him. They feature one of the most striking Hellenistic portraits, depicting Alexander the Great wearing the horn of Zeus-Ammon, a symbol of divinity.
