Silver Tetradrachm, Byzantion mint Obverse: Head of deified Alexander right. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros seated left; Monogram before; BY under throne; trident in exergue. Condition: Choice EF, Coin is much better than picture. This coin has nice surfaces with decent light silver metal, darker in the recesses. For the Byzantion mint, the artistic renditions of both Alexander and Athena are exceptional. The picture is not good enough to show the intricate detail on the reverse, especially on the face on the shield. Only detractions are a slight weakness at the end of the trident and some encrustations in the recesses. Neither detracts from the exceptional appearance of this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? It is uncommon to see highly artistic coins from certain mints. It is also uncommon to find well centered and well struck coins from certain mints. The Byzantion mint is such a mint, and it is extremely uncommon to find a coin as well styled and struck as the coin at auction. Compare this coin to a Byzantion mint coin listed in CNG 55, lot 315, which was a toned good VF and estimated at $800 and sold for $825 + 10% or $907.50. The coin at auction has significantly less wear and better detail than lot 315. What distinguishes the coin at auction is coin is the extremely attractive renditions of Alexander and Athena. The face on the shield is fully struck. Athena's helmet & plume, her face, the gown, the throne, the shield, and Nike are all of a style superior and more finely engraved than lot 315. The Athena in lot 315 is out of proportion and awkward in design, her right arm and thighs are too long. The coin at auction is the best Byzantion mint Lysimachos I have ever seen. Size: 16.14 grams, die axis=0, flan 3.6 mm thick, 36 mm in diameter. References: SNGC. 113. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
