Silver Tetradrachm, Calchedon mint Obverse: Head of deified Alexander right. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros seated left; AP ligatured after left legend, E over knee; grain ear in exergue. Condition: Superb EF, Coin is much better than picture. This coin has beautiful surfaces with smooth lustrous metal, especially on the devices. The artistic renditions of both Alexander and Athena are exceptional. The picture is not good enough to show the finely engraved gown with pleats from the waist down flowing over her right leg and over the throne and below her left calf. Only detractions are a slight double striking and a thin edge on the flan before the face. Neither detracts from the exceptional beauty of this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? Compare this coin to similar types Triton I, lot 461, and Triton I, lot 462, where two EF's estimated at $750 sold for $990 + 10% and $980 + 10%; in Triton III, lot 419, an EF was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $900 + 10%; in Triton II, lot 356, a superb EF was estimated at $2,000 and sold for $2,100 + 10%; in Triton II, lot 359, a choice EF was estimated at $2,500 and sold for $4,250 + 10%; this coin is significantly better than the EF's in Triton I and Triton III. It is better than both the superb EF and choice EF of Triton II. This coin seems to have better surfaces than any of the Triton coins. The artistic style of the obverse is exceptional, the forehead and brow being a refined version of Triton II, lot 359. What distinguishes this coin is the extremely beautiful rendition on the reverse. The gown below the waist of Athena is intricately lined on her right leg and in the drape over the throne and beneath her left calf. Her helmet & plume, her face, the gown, the throne, and Nike are all of a style much superior and more finely engraved than any of the Triton examples. Some of the Triton examples are out of proportion, poorly engraved and awkward. [Image] Size: 16.14 grams, die axis=0, flan 4.8 mm thick, 31 mm in diameter.
