Silver Tetradrachm, Ainos Mint Obverse: Head of deified Alexander right. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm leaning on decorated shield; Enthroned cult image before, goat head before knee, Greek legends. Condition: Choice EF, Coin is much better than picture. This is a medium high relief coin on both sides measuring 4.5mm thick on a 30.8 mm diameter flan. This coin has beautiful surfaces with smooth lustrous metal. The metal is excellent light silver. The centering is superb. The artistic renditions of both Alexander and Athena are exceptional. The picture is not good enough to show the excellent detail on the reverse. This is a stunning coin with exceptional beauty. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Valuation: Why Valuation? Compare this coin to similar types Triton I, lot 461, and Triton I, lot 462, where two EF's estimated at $750 sold for $990 + 99 = $1089 and $980 + 98 = $1078; in Triton III, lot 419, an EF was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $900 + 90 = $990; in Triton II, lot 356, a superb EF was estimated at $2,000 and sold for $2,100 + 305 = $2,405; in Triton II, lot 359, a choice EF was estimated at $2,500 and sold for $4,250 + 637.50 = $4,887.50; this coin is significantly better than the EF's in Triton I and Triton III. The reverse of the coin at auction is better than both the superb EF and choice EF of Triton II. The artistic style of the obverse is exceptional, the forehead and brow being a refined version of Triton II, lot 359. What distinguishes this coin is the artistic rendition on the reverse. Athena's helmet & plume, her face, the goat's head, and enthroned cult image, are all of a style superior and more finely engraved than any of the Triton examples. Some of the Triton examples are out of proportion, poorly engraved and awkward. The fine style of Alexander is second only to the Triton II, lot 359, but perhaps more realistic.
