380. Larissa. Circa 400-380 BC. AR Drachm (6.02 gm). Youth wrestling bull left / Bridled horse galloping right. Herrmann pl. III, 18 var. (spacing of ethnic); SNG Copenhagen 109. Toned, good VF, small flan crack. ($300) The following lots present many varieties of the ‘middle group’ of facing head drachms. In her article "A Hoard of Facing Head Larissa Drachms" (SNR 79 [2000] pp. 7-15), Catharine Lorber identifies this group as Herrmann’s group VII, series L and B through H. This series was perhaps issued during the 370’s-360’s following the ‘early group’ of facing head drachms which Lorber dates to the first decades of the fourth century ("The Early Facing Head Drachms of Thessalian Larissa" in Florilegium Numismaticum, pp. 259-260). This middle group is known for the diversity of its reverse types (some of which we have never been able to offer at auction before), breaking out of the uniformity of the earlier and later groups.
