Ancient Coinage of Syria, Seleukeia Pieria

Seleukeia in Pieria (Seleukeia ad Mare, modern day Cevlik) was founded in 300 BC north of the Orontes estuary in the Pieria. To overcome the heavy silting to the harbours, some emperors, e.g. Titus and Constantius II, ordered canals and tunnels to be dug. Many remains can still be seen today: Titus' tunnel, canal and bridge, a road of rock tombs, the old city walls and the 1st-5th century tombs at the Besikli Caves.
