Aulus Gabinus (Proconsul), Marisa mint, Syria. AE17, 4.2g. obv: Helmeted head of Athena (?) right rev: Serpent entwined in palm branch GA / MA in right field. RPC Supp. I, pp 46-47; Rosenberger II, 30 (attr. to Gaza); Hendin 874a Notes: rare mint, from David Hendin inventory. Qedar in "The Coins of Marisa, a new mint" identifies the helmeted head on the obverse as a portrait of Gabinus. Burnett suggests that it is Athena which seems the more likely explanation as good examples of this coin shows the head having long curly hair, wears a necklace and possibly also earrings.
