Charioteer driving slow mule biga right, above Nike flying right to crown mules, laurel leaf and berry in exergue / [M]ES-S-A-N-IO-N, hare leaping right above dolphin leaping left. Caltabiano 493 (D201/R201). Jameson 649 (same dies). Obverse struck from rusty die, the hare on reverse remarkably well-detailed. Good extremely fine Caltabiano dated her Series XIII, to which this coin belongs, to the years ca. 425-421 BC. Her study was reviewed by C. Boehringer in SNR 78 (1999), pp. 171-190. Boehringer noted an obverse die link between Series XIII and Series XV, dated 412-408 BC. After reviewing the relevant hoard evidence, he proposed markedly lower dates for Series XII-XV.
