AR tetradrachm (16.47 gm). AR tetradrachm (16.47 gm), Uncertain Mint 40 in Commagene. Diademed head of Seleucus II right / Apollo standing left, examining arrow and resting elbow on tall tripod, NP monogram in outer right field. Unpublished, from a previously unknown obverse die. Unique. With a remarkable, neatly engraved portrait. Pitting in reverse fields. Extremely fine This unidentified mint in the Upper Euphrates region struck the vast majority of its tetradrachms from a single obverse die, seen in the four preceding lots. The die quickly developed a large flaw on the back of the king’s neck yet continued in use. It was reengraved twice, without fully repairing the flaw. The impression is that the mint lacked a competent engraver. It is thus very interesting to encounter a second die, attested by this unique coin. It closely imitates the second state of the mint’s principal die, and shares the same reverse die. Estimated Value: $ 1,000 Lot sold for $1,800, [ approx 1350 EUR, 936 GBP ] plus 15% buyers fee.
