Silver Tetradrachm, Antioch Mint, Circa 156/155 BC. Obverse: Head of Demetrios right, diademed. Reverse: Tyche seated left, on throne supported by winged monster (Nereid), holding baton and cornucopiae; Greek legends, Demetrios in left field; monogram to left. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Condition: Superb EF. Coin is much, much better than picture. This coin has excellent metal with good surfaces on a large flan, reverse better than obverse and quite minty. It is a light medium silver color with just a bit of golden orange iridescence in the protected areas of the field and surrounding the portrait. The artistic rendition of Demetrios is superb, one of the best I have seen. It is quite realistic. It is not a younger portrait, but shows him somewhat aged. The strike is very good for these with just a bit of softness at the high point. It has nice relief on a 4.2 mm thick, 31.0 mm flan. See an enlargement of the obverse. Centering is great on both sides. The coin has exceptional design for the reverse. The reverse is done in with superb elegance by simple strokes. See an enlargement of the reverse. The draping is excellent and you can even make out the nude breast on the Nereid. The only faults for the coin is the weak wreath and slight nose ding on the obverse, and a couple spots of die rust and a small line die defect in the field of the reverse at 9:00 (not a scratch since it rises from the field. None of these has much effect on this truly gorgeous coin. By the way, if you ever clicked on my "picture" link, you will have read my opinion as to why many sellers use small pictures. For comparison, check out this small picture of this coin: ensmallment of the coin. This is a truly exceptional example of Demetrios I. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Valuation: Why Valuation? I checked out the last 17 CNG and Triton catalogs (except CNG 47), There is nothing close to this coin. The best was CNG 55, lot 674, only a near EF which was estimated at $400 and sold for $600 + 60 = $660. While lot 674 has nice style and a younger portrait, notice that the ear is worn (or softly struck) into the head band. The coin on auction here has a beautifully defined ear with only a trace of wear. The coin on auction also has a more distinguished middle age portrait (notice that I didn't say "weather worn" or "over partied look" --- just my age bias showing) This coin has great style, excellent state of preservation, and is of a ruler whose coins are notoriously not found in decent condition, let alone artistic. Size: 16.65 grams, die axis=1.0, flan 4.2 mm thick, 31.0 mm in diameter. References: Newell (S.M.A.) 95, Houghton ---. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
