Bronze. Laureate head of Apollo r. Bowcase and bow over shoulder. Border of
dots./Tripod. BASILEWS DHMHTRIOY. Antioch mint. This rare and beautiful
coin depicts the divine ancestor of the Seleucid dynasty, the god Apollo.
On the reverse is the mantic tripod which Apollo's priestess at Delphi used
to commune with the god and see into the future. It was customary for her
to respond to questioners in riddling poems that were frequently
misinterpreted. At several shrines the Seleucids had the right to consult
Apollo's oracle before others. This is an ex Houghton coll. piece and the
plate coin for Coins of the Seleucid Empire no. 169.
