Obv: Crested Macedonian helmet r./ Rev: Aphlaston. BASILEWS ANTIOXOY. This very rare coin from the mint of Ascalon in Palestine was minted under Antiochus VII Sidetes. Antiochus VII spent time in Palestine and Judea early in his reign fighting against the usurper Diodotus Tryphon. During the war he allied himself with the High Priest Simon Thassi and the Maccabean forces, but after Simon’s death in 134, Antiochus restored Jerusalem to the Seleucid Empire. During the siege of the city Antiochus scrupulously respected Jewish religious sensibilities, for which he earned the title of “Eusebes”, “the Pious”. In 130 Antiochus VII set out on a disastrous campaign against the Parthians in which he and much of his army was destroyed.
