AR tetradrachm (16.98 gm). SELEUCID KINGDOM: Antiochus I Soter to Antiochus II Theos at Susa. AR tetradrachm (16.98 gm), Susa. Head of young Heracles right in lion skin headdress, from same obverse die as preceding / Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter, SEA monogram in left field, DUR monogram under throne. SC 603.3c. ESM 361. Inclusion on cheek and neck. Good very fine This coin attests to the continuing deterioration of its obverse die, bits of which adhere to the head of Heracles. Newell assigned this tetradrachm to Antiochus II because it is control linked to a bronze with his portrait (though the likeness is not entirely convincing). The obverse die link between this tetradrachm and the preceding indicates that the sequence of emission in ESM (and SC) should be revised, so the ESM 361–362 follow directly after ESM 354–355. This would seem to mark the point of transition from the reign of Antiochus I to that of Antiochus II. Estimated Value: $ 550 Lot was unsold.
