AR tetradrachm (16.97 gm). SELEUCID KINGDOM: Antiochus I Soter to Antiochus II Theos at Susa. AR tetradrachm (16.97 gm), Susa. Head of young Heracles right in lion skin headdress / Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter, SQE monogram in left field, DAI monogram under throne. SC 399.9. ESM 354b, pl. xxvii, 1 (same dies). Inclusion on cheek and reverse slightly off-center, otherwise good very fine The dark spot on Heracles’ cheek is a bit of the die, which was deteriorating and left this deposit adhering to the coin. The tetradrachms of Susa long retained the types of Alexander and legends naming Seleucus I, a conservatism that creates problems for their regnal attribution. In ESM, Newell assigned this issue to Antiochus I because it is doubly control linked to a bronze with his portrait. But he also noted a change of reverse style within the issue (our coin is of the second style), and confessed the difficulty of determining the point of transition from Antiochus I to Antiochus II. The die link exposed here (see the following lot) brings us closer to a solution. Estimated Value: $ 450 Lot was unsold. Re-used by permission of Freeman and Sear, www.freemanandsear.com.
