Rare Mithridates VI portrait in gold

     Mithridates the Great, AV stater, (8.27g) Tomis Mint, Types of
     Lysimachos continued, struck c. 87 BC, Diademed head of
     Mithridates VI right, as the deified Alexander, with horn of
     Ammon, dot behind. / BA…ILEW… LY…IMAXOU Athena seated left,
     holding wreath bearing Nike, Mithridatic star above, QEM below
     arm, shield at side, TO below, ornate trident exergue. SNG
     Cop.1091var.; same dies as CNG 6/93 lot 77 but with the addition
     of the star. (A topic not mentioned in the exchanges between CNG
     and Harlan Berk is the star added to a common pair of dies, late
     in their usage. This star appears on a number of other
     Mithridates coins.) Good VF, luster in recesses.
