      KINGDOM OF PONTUS. Mithradates VI (120-63 BC). Silver 
      tetradrachm (15.11 gm). Odessus, period of the 2nd 
      Mithradatic War, ca. 83-82 BC. Head of young Heracles 
      right in lion skin headdress, with features of 
      Mithradates VI / BASILEWS ALEXANDROU, Zeus enthroned 
      left, holding eagle on extended right hand and scepter 
      in left, LA in inner left field, ODH in exergue. Price 
      1191, pl. xlix (same obverse die). AMNG I/2, p. 540, 
      2174. Toned. Flatly struck on the reverse as is usual. 
      Good very fine 

      The transformation of the Heracles obverse type into a 
      cryptic portrait of Mithradates VI dates this issue to 
      the time of the Mithradatic Wars.
