     near mint ancient gold Stater featuring a large portrait of
     Alexander the Great for your consideration. This coin was not
     known to exist until a horde surfaced recently. They had remained
     hidden for over 2000 years until a lucky discovery brought these
     previously unknown treasures into the modern world. Almost
     immediately a serious controversy was ignited between ancient
     numismatic scholars concerning the heritage of these coins. One
     group argues that this coin was issued by Mithradates the Great
     to finance his military campaign in Thrace between 88 - 87 BC.
     The other group insists that this coin was minted by Brutus, in
     the name of Lysimachus, to pay his mercenaries during the period
     of Roman civil war (44 - 42 BC) following the assassination of
     Julius Caesar.

     The jury still seems to be out regarding the final historical
     placement of this outstanding gold coin. There is agreement,
     however, that the coin we are offering here does indeed portray
     Alexander the Great and that it was minted at Tomis; a city along
     the Thracian coast of the Black Sea.
