                      ORC0811 shekel of Tyre, 31/2 AD

   Tyre, Phoenicia, AR tetradrachm (shekel) (12.80g), Northern Israel
   Mint (?), Dated Year PNZ = 31/2 AD though the date is crude, Laureate
   head of Melquarth right. / Eagle standing left, club before, [P]NZ to
[ ]left, KP to right. RPC- (date); RPC Supplement- (same). Crude VF,    [ ]
   scratches.

   The shekel and half-shekel of Tyre were the only coins accepted in
   payment of the annual temple tax paid by every Jewish male. The dates
   of this period noted in RPC and RPC Supplement are generally
   supported by only one or two examples. This date is unpublished,
   though its existence seems no surprise. Struck shortly before the
   death of Christ. Found off the coast of Lebanon, presumably from an
   ancient shipwreck. Some silver loss because a full weight example
   should weigh about 14.1 grams.
