Classical Numismatic Group, Inc Phoenicia, Tyre. Year 126 (1 BC/1 AD). AR Tetradrachm - Click for Larger Image Shekel (13.94 gm). Laureate bust of Melkart right / Eagle standing left on prow; date and club to left, KP [Image] and (A-M)monogram to right. BMC Phoenicia pg. 248, 196 var.(?); RPC I 4650. Good VF, a few gouges. Rare. Estimate $750. History: The year appears to read PKG=126 (1 BC/1 AD), but the monogram is appropriate to year PKE=125 (2/1 BC). The lack of a Year 126 specimen in BMC makes comparison of monograms impossible. This coin is a likely a rarity from what could be called "year zero;" the turn of the Christian millenium, the traditional birthdate of Christ. Regardless, either date is extremely rare, one specimen cited in RPC for year 125, and three for year 126. Used by permission of CNG, www.historicalcoins.com
