Ancient Coinage of Peloponnesos, Achaia, Bura

Bura, formerly on the coast of the Gulf of Corinth, was destroyed by the earthquake in 373 BC which also destroyed Helike. It was rebuilt further inland with temples of Demeter, Aphrodite, Eileithyia and Isis. There was also an oracle of Herakles which comprised of a board similar to a chessboard onto which visitors threw dice. Bura joined the Achaean League in 275 BC. The ruins of "new" Bura are between the rivers of Bokhusia (Cerynites), and of Kalavryta (Buraicus) near Trupia, whilst the ruins of the original Bura are at the bottom of the sea.
