Pamphylia, Uncertain Southern mint AR Stater. 380-333 BC. Obv: Athena Nikephoros standing left, holding Nike and resting hand on shield, spear under left arm; coiled serpent at feet to left, Pamphylian script to right. Rev: Apollo standing left wearing chiton and chlamys, quiver over shoulder, holding staff with shoot near bottom, sacrificing from phiale over altar to left. Derivitive Greek inscription to right. Atlan -; SNG Aulock -; SNG BN -; BMC -. Cf. CNG 78, 2008, Lot 895. 10.77g, 25mm. Very Rare; unpublished type. Extremely Fine, beautifully toned. Probably the finest example known. Ex Leu, 1995, Lot 161. Although similar issues were struck at Side and Holmoi, an attribution to either city is unlikely because the Side issues all carry the city emblem, a pomegranate, in the obverse left field, and the Holmoi issues all have a dolphin in the obverse left field. Atlan dates the inscribed issues at Side to 370-333 BC and Casabonne dates those of Holmoi to 380-375 BC. While the serpent on this present coin may indicate the mint of issue, no city in the region used a serpent as a civic emblem during the period in question. £ 8,200.00 US$ 13,072.78 € 9,937.59 Roma Numismatics Art. no. 11212 (hence the ref.
