     Macedon, Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.80 gm).
     Inebriated Dionysos reclining on back of an ass, holding a
     kantharos; to right, crow between two branches / Vine of six
     grape clusters within linear shallow incuse square. Noe, The
     Mende (Kaliandra) Hoard, ANSNNM 27 (1926), pl. IV, 33 (same
     dies); Gulbenkian 409; SNG ANS 334. Toned VF, minor porosity.

     An ancient colony of Eretria, Mende was situated in Pallene in
     the Chalkidian district of Macedonia. The god Dionysos was
     particularly revered by the inhabitants and was depicted on the
     town's coinage, and was related to Mende's primary crop, the
     vine, from which she produced famous wines that are frequently
     noted by ancient authors.
