AR tetradrachm (16.70 gm). MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Philip V (220-179 BC). Silver tetradrachm (16.70 gm), issued ca. 220 BC. Diademed head of Philip V right / BASILEWS FILIPPOU, Athena Alkidemos, viewed from behind, advancing left, brandishing thunderbolt in raised right hand and holding shield with star device on left arm, GA monogram reading downward in inner left field. Cf. Mamroth, ZfN XL, 1, Gulbenkian 886, Jameson 2454, McClean 3628, and Boehringer, Chronologie, pl. 7, 6-9 (all with two monograms on reverse). Rare. Very fine Until recently, all tetradrachms of Philip V with the Athena reverse type were examples of a single emission, marked with a pair of monograms in the inner left and inner right fields. Boehringer, Chronologie, pp. 104-107, examined the chronology of this coinage and concluded that it must have been an accession issue which, for propaganda reasons, portrayed the seventeen-year-old king as a mature man. A tetradrachm with just one monogram was offered in Triton V, 15-16 January 2002, lot 1310, but it was control linked to the known issue and struck from its latest obverse die. The present specimen apparently extends Philip's first series a bit further. Its portrait continues the stylistic evolution of the known coinage, with a large head showing a hornlike lock of hair at the temple, as on Boehringer, Chronologie, pl. 7, 9 and the Triton V specimen. However, our coin differs in its reverse style and control convention, and there is a slight chance it is the product of a second Macedonian mint.
