Sale: CNG 69, Lot: 151. Closing Date: Jun 08, 2005. Estimate $750 KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.30 gm, 1h). Amphipolis mint. Struck under Kassander or Demetrios, circa 298-294 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Youth on horseback right, holding palm; thunderbolt and X below, ME monogram below raised foreleg. Le Rider pl. 48, 3; SNG ANS 810. Good VF. Choice centering and strike. ($750) From the Dr. Thomas Dailey Collection. This coin is representative of a late issue of posthumous Phillip tetradrachms from Amphipolis that present a curious feature. The youth on horseback, normally seen as an ephebe wearing a petasos or taenia, on these coins look remarkably feminized: the hair is tied back in a chignon and the body type is generally "rounder" than usual. Why this would occur is unknown. Copyright © CNG 2002 High bid of $750, $862.5 June 8, 2005. Used by permission of CNG, www.cngcoins.com
