         Gold stater, Alexander the Great, VF

     Kingdom of Macedon, AV stater, (8.54g) Pella Mint, types of
     Philip II, 369-336 BC, struck c. 340-328 BC, Laureate head of
     Apollo (?) right / Charioteer holding kentron in biga right,
     trident below, QILIPPOU in exergue. LeRider 277, SNG ANS 144var.
     Nicely centered VF, rim rounded from ancient jewelry use.

     Gold staters in the name of Philip II were continued by Alexander
     and Philip III. They were widely imitated for the next 200 years.
     It has been suggested that the large debt left by Philip was paid
     off with the coinage in the name of Philip II.
