References: Newell, WSM page 84, plate XIV 1-3; for the first one see also The Weber Collection, Vol. II, No. 2134; Price 3191. Grade: OF A GREAT HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE, EXTREMELY RARE and VERY FINE Note: Newell in his WSM attributes this coin to the mint of Antagonea, the capital of Antigonus empire founded in 306 B.C. and abandoned. after the battle of Ipsus in 301 B.C. when Seleucus founded Seleuceia Pieria nearby. “In 306 B.C., while Demetrius Poliorcetes was bringing to a brilliant conclusion his sudden attack on Cyprus, his father, Antigonus Monophtalmus, was actively engaged in building the new capital of the empire Antigonea on the Orontes. Here, as soon as possible, a mint was put into operation… This group of coins is not only of the old Alexander type but still bears the hallowed name of the great Macedonian hero – a policy to which Antigonus had consistently adhered in all the mints of the empire. He allowed only coins of the pure Alexander type to be issued in his dominion and claimed to be the real successor of Alexander. As such he probably made a point of keeping the royal coinage of his predecessor as unchanged as possible….The first variety of the group struck in this mint has a wreath-bearing Nike, replacing the usual eagle in the hands of Zeus. This temporary innovation seems eminently appropriate for the initial coinage at Antigonus’ new capital, an issue undoubtedly brought out soon after his son’s great victory at Salamis had astounded the ancient world, and had given father and son undisputed naval supremacy over all the eastern Mediterranean.” Price suggests also that the coin could be struck in the mint of Seleuceia Pieria or more probably, at Seleuceia ad Tigrim. The most notable feature of this coin is that the eagle of Zeus is replaced by a figure of Nike. This is the only occasion in the coinage in the name of Alexander on which this occurs. It is assumed that the Nike was a reference to the victory by Demetrius over Ptolemy off Salamis. On the coin of Seleucus it would refer to the victory over Antigonus at Ipsus.
