AR tetradrachm (16.60 gm). MACEDONIAN KINGDOM: Alexander III, the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (16.60 gm), Carian(?) mint, ca. 225 BC. Head of young Heracles right in lion skin headdress / Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter. Trésors 5.21. Price -. Rare and of fine style. Good very fine Although Price lists a number of unmarked tetradrachms, none of them match this piece in all details of style and fabric. Seyrig, however, recorded a similar specimen in the Dniyé hoard. He attributed it to an uncertain Carian mint because of an obverse die link to Mektepini 414, a coin with a double axe symbol. Other hoard evidence points to a date in or shortly before 225 BC for this issue. Estimated Value: $ 500 Lot was unsold. Re-used by permission of Freeman and Sear, www.freemanandsear.com.
