[Image] Description: We are quite pleased to offer this truly superb authentic gold Stater of Alexander the Great for your consideration. This coin weights 8.6 grams and is 19 mm in diameter and still maintains some of the original mint luster from its creation over 2300 years ago! Our photo does not capture the detail and luster which are so apparent when viewing this coin in person. Of particular interest is the fact that both sides of this exceptional coin are very well centered and struck. The obverse features a gorgeous high relief portrait of the goddess Athena while the reverse depicts the goddess Nike with Alexander's name behind. Adding importance to rhe history of this coin is the fact that it was originally minted in Alexander's birth place of Macedon at Amphipolis! Of all the ancient Greek coins, the coinage of Alexander presents collectors with the most extensive array of mint types with over 2000 varieties known. Alexander's coinage continued to be minted for hundreds of years after his death. Most posthumous coins can be identified by changes in the design which sometimes can be quite subtle. The subject of much debate has always been whether the obverse portrait of Herakles with lion skin on the silver coinage is actually a depiction of Alexander himself. The only known portraits of Alexander which numismatic scholars are certain of are a bronze issue of Memphis and a five shekel silver coin. There is little doubt, however, that ancient cultures believed the portrait to be that of Alexander since, by this time portraiture of reigning monarchs had become fairly commonplace. As such, it is reasonable to assume that people would have believed the image of Herakles was actually that of Alexander. The fact that this same belief and conclusion continues to linger over 2300 years later serves as a testament to Alexander's incredible achievements and their impact on the history of mankind.
