MACEDON, Aegae. Circa 500-480 BC. AR Stater (9.27 gm). Kneeling goat 
      right, head reverted; annulet above / Quadripartite incuse square. Rosen 
      88; Weber 1839; Svoronos pl. III, 17; Traité pl. xlix, 9. EF, a few minor 
      corrosion spots, mostly on the reverse, overall an exceptional example. 
      Rare. ($10,000) This punning type with a goat (aigoV) clearly alludes to 
      the old Macedonian
      royal capital Aigai, founded by Perdikkas I, and reappears among the coin 
      types of later kings. The recent discoveries of royal tombs at Vergina, 
      see M. Andronicos, The royal graves at Vergina (1978), confirm this 
      identification of the site as Aigai.
