=AndA= THOURIOI Double Nomos NearVF/NiceVF! $588.88 Aug-23-00 Lucania, Thourioi, 410-330 BC. Silver Double Nomos, 15.78 grams Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing Attic helmet decorated with the sea monster Skylla hurling stone; I(delta) behind. Reverse: Bull butting right, tunny-fish in exergue. Condition: Near VF/Nice VF; Coin is much better than the picture. It is a light silver color with good surfaces. The I(delta) at the back of the neck and below the crest is struck crystal clear and the picture barely shows it. Likewise, Skylla's head is very nice and it does not show well in the picture. There is really not much wear on the coin with the bull's shoulders not worn much at all. The weakness on the obverse is from a worn die and not wear. The irregular flan only barely touches the design. The bull is quite attractive. Overall, the coin is a very nice example of a scarce Greek coin. ex-CNG 41, lot 112 listed as near VF and estimated at $750. In CNG 41, lot 113, there is a Fine/VF example estimated at $500. Both the obverse and the reverse of the coin at auction are much nicer than lot 113. This coin is the much scarcer double nomos, weighing 15.78 grams, not the more commonly seen nomos which only weighs about 7.8 grams. This is a very nice example of a scarce Greek coin. Size: 15.78 grams, die axis=10.5, flan 4.5 mm thick, 27 mm in diameter. References: ex-CNG 41, lot 112, this coin; Noe Group F28 (same obverse die).
